TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
Cupping Therapy
Cupping uses glass or plastic cups to create gentle suction on the skin, usually over the back, neck and shoulders. At Healify, cupping and gua sha are offered as add-ons to an acupuncture visit, most often for muscle tension.
Types of cupping we offer
- Fire cupping: a flame briefly warms the air inside a glass cup, which creates suction when placed on the skin. The flame never touches you.
- Slide cupping: oil is applied and the cup is moved across the muscles, similar to a massage stroke.
- Gua sha: a smooth-edged tool is stroked across the skin to address tension.
Marks after cupping
Round red or purple marks are common and usually fade within several days to about a week. They are not burns. Let us know if you have an event coming up and would prefer to avoid visible marks.
Who should avoid cupping
Tell us if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, fragile or broken skin, a skin condition in the area, or are pregnant. Cupping may not be suitable, or may need to be adjusted.
Price
Cupping add-on: $10. Gua sha and slide cupping add-on: $40. Both are added to an acupuncture visit and are excluded from promotions and discounts.
What the research shows
Research on cupping is limited and of mixed quality. Some patients find it helps with muscle tightness. We offer it as an optional add-on, not a stand-alone treatment for medical conditions.
Common questions
Does cupping hurt?
Most people feel a strong pulling sensation that eases after a few moments. We adjust the suction to what is comfortable.
