NEW PATIENTS
What to Expect at Your First Visit
If you have never had acupuncture, it’s normal to feel a little unsure. Here is exactly what happens, from booking to aftercare. You can also start with a free 15-minute meet and greet.
Before you come
- Book online or call 780-435-5115.
- Complete the intake form sent by our booking system.
- Eat a light meal beforehand and wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up above the knees and elbows.
- Bring a list of your medications and your insurance details.
During your visit (about 60 minutes)
- Health history: we talk about your main concern, your medical history and your goals.
- Assessment: including Traditional Chinese Medicine methods such as checking your pulse and tongue.
- Your plan: Frank explains what he recommends, how many visits might be reasonable, the costs, and any risks, and asks for your consent.
- Treatment: fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed and you rest for a period of time.
Does it hurt?
The needles are very fine. Most people feel a brief pinch or a dull, heavy or tingling sensation, and many find treatment relaxing. Tell Frank if anything feels uncomfortable and he will adjust.
After treatment
- Some people feel relaxed or a little tired. Plan a calm rest of the day if you can.
- Mild soreness or a small bruise at a needle site is possible and settles on its own.
- Drink water and avoid intense exercise right after treatment.
Safety
Serious complications are rare when acupuncture is provided by a trained practitioner using sterile needles. Please tell us if you are pregnant or might be, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have a pacemaker, or have a condition that affects healing.
Common questions
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a support person.
What if I decide acupuncture isn’t for me?
That’s fine. There is no obligation to continue, and the meet and greet is a good way to decide before your first treatment.
